NEW YORK, April 11, 2025 - Hearst Magazines announced that Esquire was named the winner of the 2025 National Magazine Award for General Excellence, Service and Lifestyle. The announcement was made by Hearst Magazines President Debi Chirichella.
"This prestigious honor serves as a testament to the remarkable creativity and storytelling excellence of our brand," Chirichella said of the award, which was announced yesterday. "Under Editor-in-Chief Michael Sebastian's leadership, the team has consistently produced engaging and impactful content that resonates deeply with a discerning audience who looks to Esquire as a trusted authority in entertainment, style, culture, and attitude."
Now in their 60th year, the National Magazine Awards, also known as the Ellies, are sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards honor magazine storytelling published in any print or digital medium, including newspapers and newsletters. The National Magazine Awards are currently presented in 18 categories, ranging from Reporting and Feature Writing to Podcasting and Video.
"I am thrilled by the honor, and the beautiful thing about General Excellence is that it honors everyone at Esquire," Editor-in-Chief Michael Sebastian said. "I'm so proud of the team and grateful for all the good, hard work they do every day across platforms. They are all generally excellent! The founding editor of Esquire, Arnold Gingrich, called the first issue in 1933 the brand's low mark - his words - because every issue should surpass the one after it. I think about that a lot, especially now, when we publish every day across multiple channels. Sometimes it keeps me up at night. Earning General Excellence is a sign we're meeting this challenge. Last night I slept pretty well."
ASME will host the winners of the National Magazine Awards, ASME Award for Fiction, ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration and ASME NEXT Awards at a reception in New York City on Tuesday, June 3.
