On February 13, at the Chinese Embassy in Samoa's Spring Festival reception, the original song Southern Cross (南十字星) and its music video, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Samoa (2025), were officially released. Chinese Ambassador to Samoa Fei Mingxing, Samoan Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Toelupe Maoiautele Poumulinuku Onesemo , and 120 friends from all walks of life in Samoa witnessed the occasion.
The song alternates between Chinese and Samoan, integrating traditional cultural symbols of China and Samoa. With sincere lyrics and poetic melodies, it paints a vivid picture of the friendship between China and Samoa-one that transcends mountains and seas, built on mutual understanding and close bonds.
Composed by Philton Solomona, a young Samoan composer who once studied in China, the song features lyrics written by Kotimani Taavao (in Samoan) and Zhou Yufang (in Chinese), the Chinese Co-Dean of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa. It was released by SolFa Music Samoa Inc. and performed by youth representatives from both countries.
