City of Santa Monica statement on the passing of Wallis Annenberg

July 28, 2025 1:31 PM

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Wallis Annenberg, a visionary philanthropist whose generosity and compassion improved the well-being of countless community members through Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House. Wallis' contribution is felt every day in the city of Santa Monica and because of her steadfast vision, multiple generations of Santa Monicans and beachgoers have a welcoming place to create memories to last a lifetime.

As chair of the Annenberg Foundation, Wallis envisioned the future for the historic but distressed property on Santa Monica Beach and in 2005, forged a path to transform the former estate of silent film actress Marion Davies into what we now know today as the Annenberg Community Beach House.

This beloved venue, made possible through a private/public partnership with the Annenberg Foundation, the city of Santa Monica and the state of California, is the region's only free, public beach house and a true jewel of the West Coast.

The Annenberg Community Beach House has welcomed millions of visitors since opening its doors in 2009 and the city is proud to continue the legacy of Wallis' innovative vision to provide a gathering space for community members to recreate, experience the arts and exchange ideas.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Annenberg family and friends, the Annenberg Foundation staff and all who were touched by her life. May Wallis' tireless belief in the power of community continue to inspire acts of service, kindness and compassion.
