Celebrate Heat Pump Water Heater Week!

Published on October 26, 2026

Join Nearly 1,000 Palo Alto Residents Who Have Made the Switch

October 26 to 29 is Heat Pump Water Heater Week, ending with Heat Pump Water Heater Day on Thursday. This year, we're celebrating the love and the many reasons people are switching to a heat pump water heater. It's also your last chance to save an extra $500 on a new heat pump water heater. The discount ends October 31.

Why Homes Love a Heat Pump Water Heater

A heat pump water heater works a lot like a refrigerator in reverse. Instead of burning gas to make heat, it pulls warmth from the surrounding air and moves it into your water. Because it moves heat instead of making it, a heat pump water heater can create two to three times as much heat for the energy it uses.

Why residents love them

  • Lower energy use. Heat pump water heaters use up to 70% less energy than a standard water heater, which can mean lower bills over time.
  • A safer home. There is no gas flame and no combustion in your home. Gas appliances that aren't vented properly can leak carbon monoxide, a serious health hazard.
  • Cleaner air for everyone. With nothing burning, there's no exhaust or chemicals adding to the air around your home and neighborhood.
  • Peace of mind. Heat pump water heaters installed through our program automatically detect leaks.

Sustaining Our Future

The City of Palo Alto is on mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. Buildings are the second-largest source of emissions in Palo Alto, after transportation, which makes building electrification one of the most powerful ways we can reach that goal.

Because Palo Alto's electricity is already carbon neutral, building emissions come mainly from burning natural gas.

That's where heat pump water heaters come in. A water heater runs every day, so swapping a gas unit for a heat pump is one of the best ways a household can cut its emissions.
