Wilbert Bryant ’86: From Military Innovation to Agricultural Impact

For retired Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Bryant '86, service and innovation have defined every stage of his journey.

A native of Oak City, North Carolina, Bryant was raised by a father who was a farmer and a mother who balanced life as a housewife and part-time schoolteacher.

Bryant graduated from North Carolina Central University(NCCU) in 1986 with a degree in public administration, where his professors instilled in him the values of ethics, discipline and community leadership.

"NCCU's motto, Truth and Service, became my guiding principle," Bryant said. "My professors challenged me to think critically and lead with integrity-values that translated directly into my military career."

Bryant went on to serve more than two decades as an information systems officer in the U.S. Army, leading global technology and communication operations in high-pressure environments. In 1996, he earned dual master's degrees from Webster University in computer resource information management and procurement and acquisition management. His work required technical precision, adaptability, and strategic planning.

A New Mission: Cultivating Community Through Farming

After retiring from the Army, Bryant returned to his roots in eastern North Carolina and founded WSB Farms, LLC.

"As an Army officer, I served my country. As a farmer, I serve my community," he said. "The mission has changed, but the purpose remains the same."

Today, WSB Farms produces fresh, local crops such as vegetables, soybeans, and wheat while mentoring aspiring farmers and educating youth about sustainable agriculture. Bryant modernized farming operations by using data, efficiency models and precision methods honed during his military years.

Honoring Service Through Philanthropy

In 2022, Bryant represented his alma mater as Mr. NCCU Alumni, continuing his dedication to the Eagle community. Recently, along with four fellow NCCU alumni veterans, retired Captain Dimitrus Culbreath '84, retired Lieutenant Colonel Barry Davis '84, retired Colonel Dallis Barnes '83 and retired Colonel Walter Thomas II '87, he helped establish the American Veterans Endowed Scholarship, a fund to support students from military families. The scholarship will be fully endowed at $25,000 over five years.

"My personal motivation was rooted in gratitude," Bryant said. "NCCU gave me my start. The Army gave me direction. Now, it's my turn to make sure the next generation of Eagles, especially those connected to the military, have the same opportunities."
