Honouring Canada’s brave heroes on Remembrance Day

Whitby, Ontario - The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

"Each year, millions of Canadians wear the poppy close to their hearts as a symbol of remembrance, gratitude and hope for a peaceful future. It represents the lives lost, the wounds suffered-visible and invisible-and the enduring legacy of those who fought for our freedom.

We also wear it to advocate for the well-being of Veterans and active-duty members, and their families. This important work is led by local Legion branches. Their unwavering dedication strengthens towns, cities and regions across Canada, and deserves our deepest respect and appreciation.

This morning at 11 a.m., I encourage you to observe a moment of silence. Flags at Regional Headquarters are lowered to half-mast in honour of the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve Canada in times of war, conflict and peace. This day is also an opportunity to recognize the families who support them and the generations who carry forward their commitment.

Please join me in honouring their courage and sacrifice, and in expressing our deepest gratitude to all members of the Canadian Armed Forces for their service to our nation.

Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten."
