Georgia Athletics Recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month

ATHENS, GA - The University of Georgia Athletic Association is proud to join with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) in recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month, taking place in October.

"Mental health is just as important as physical health, and our athletes, coaches and fans need to know they are never alone," said Kevin Tanner, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. "Through partnerships like this with UGA Athletics, we're making sure every Georgian, from students to alumni to families across the state, knows about 988 and feels empowered to reach out for help. It's okay not to be okay, and it's always okay to ask for help."

"This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to support the whole athlete, mind and body," said Dr. Dylan Firsick, UGA's Assistant Athletic Director for Mental Health and Performance. "By connecting our student-athletes and fans with resources like 988, we're normalizing mental health conversations and providing tools for resilience, recovery and success both on and off the field."

This important initiative highlights the value of mental well-being for student-athletes, staff and the entire Bulldog Nation. By partnering with DBHDD, Georgia Athletics is helping spread awareness and encourage open conversations around mental health, including promotion of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a free, confidential, 24/7 support line for anyone in distress or concerned about a loved one.
