Poland takes over presidency of the Community of Democracies

17.01.2025

In 2025, Poland holds a one-year presidency of the Community of Democracies, a global intergovernmental coalition of countries whose main goal is to promote democratic principles and standards worldwide.

The Community of Democracies was set up at the international Ministerial Conference "Toward a Community of Democracies" convened in Warsaw in June 2000 at the initiative of the then Polish Foreign Minister Professor Bronisław Geremek and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

The Ministerial Conference led to adoption of the Warsaw Declaration, the Community of Democracies founding document signed on 27 June 2000 by representatives of 106 states. It outlines crucial standards of modern democracies and recognises the primacy of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Poland's one-year presidency of the Community of Democracies will focus on countering the impact of disinformation on democracy and human rights, strengthening democracies' resilience, and supporting human rights defenders.
