WASHINGTON, DC - For the 7^th consecutive year, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) introduced a bipartisan resolution designating September 11^th through September 17^th as Patriot Week. Patriot Week, founded by Oakland County Judge Michael Warren, aims to honor and remember the lives lost in the September 11^th terrorist attacks, commemorate Constitution Day on September 17^th, and encourage Michigan students to engage in American history.

"I am proud to lead this annual effort to honor those who died during the horrific terrorist attacks on September 11^th and recognize the profound bravery of the first responders and servicemembers who answered the call to defend our nation in one of our darkest moments," said Senator Peters. "Just as we came together in those days following September 11^th, this resolution encourages us to remember our core values as Americans, in order to address the challenges we face ahead. I continue to be thankful for Judge Warren's efforts to help champion this important initiative each year."

"Nearly 250 years ago, the miracle that is America was born. Now more than ever, if we expect to preserve our freedoms and equality, we need to unite behind what makes America the greatest nation in world history," said Patriot Week founder Judge Michael Warren. "When my then 10-year-old daughter Leah (now Dr. Warren) pounded on the table to demand a new celebration for America, she sparked a movement to do just that. We applaud Senators Peters and Kennedy for spearheading the seventh consecutive bipartisan resolution in the US Senate to help us all better fulfill the promise that is America."

Peters serves as Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as well as a member of the Armed Services Committee. Peters volunteered for the U.S. Navy Reserve at age 34, where he earned a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist designation and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the September 11^th terrorist attacks on our country, he volunteered again for drilling status and served overseas as part of his Reserve duty. He later earned a diploma from the College of Naval Command and Staff, U.S. Naval War College.
