The Texas Senate passed SB 2252 by Sen. Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) on April 22nd.
The bill would require screeners for young students in both reading and math not only for potential disabilities, but also to assess progress and better target early interventions. It would also require that all K-8 teachers participate in a mathematics academy by the 2030-31 school year, and includes a stipend for participation in a reading or math academy. In committee, TCTA testified neutrally on the bill, thanking Creighton for including stipends for participation, but cautioning him to take the lessons learned from the reading academies rollout into the math academies.
On the Senate floor, Creighton offered a handful of amendments, one of which was a TCTA-initiated request that allows high-performing teachers to be added to a TEA-administered list of tutors eligible for a $750 grant.
The bill passed 30-1 and will now continue to the House for consideration. HB 123 by Rep. Harold Dutton (D-Houston) was identical when filed, but the two have diverged since. That bill currently awaits being scheduled for the House floor.
