City Places Into Operational Status Ten School Zone Speed Cameras

Published on October 28, 2026

Following the continued success of the School Zone Traffic Enforcement (SZTE) program, the City of Syracuse will place ten school zone speed cameras into operational use as part of the continued efforts to strengthen traffic safety in and around school zones.

The cameras will be activated at the following locations:

Huntington PK-8 Woodbine Ave
Henninger High School Sunstruck Dr
Van Duyn Elementary School Loomis Ave
Frazer PK-8 Park Ave
Syracuse Latin School Jamesville Ave
Nottingham High School Meadowbrook Dr
Franklin Elementary School Park St
Steam at Dr. King Oakwood Ave
Meachem Elementary School Spaulding Ave
Porter Elementary School Rann Ave

To ensure and promote enhanced driver awareness, a 30-day warning period will begin on November 1 at the above locations. During the warning period, motorists who exceed the posted school-zone speed limit will receive warning notices. Once the warning period ends, drivers speeding through school zones will receive a $50 fine per violation. The fine amount is set by New York State. A $25 late penalty will be added for unpaid fines. Citations will be mailed to the registered owner, and signage is posted in all enforcement areas to alert drivers of camera use.

"When we slow down around our schools, we protect our kids. The results show that consistent enforcement is successfully changing driver behavior and creating safer streets around our schools," said Mayor Sharon F. Owens. "We ask drivers to stay alert, follow the posted limits and help us maintain a safe environment for our students."

After a year of the launch of the program, speeding in school zones has significantly dropped, demonstrating strong progress in protecting students and families. From November 2025 to June 2026, the average number of daily speed violations fell by 65% from approximately 1,275 to 441 per school day. Even more notably, the number of most dangerous speeders declined by 70% during the same period.
