Earlier today, Governor Hochul attended a dedication ceremony to honor the members of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who lost their lives in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and on 9/11.

I don't want to cut ahead of our local officials here. Everything is about local. But I want to say this: A reflecting pool means something. To me, the symbolism of a place that we're supposed to reflect - come here, recharge our spirits, recharge our soul - is of great consequence, hopefully to the families from decades ago, still seeking peace in the loss of their loved ones, including an unborn child who was denied the chance to grow up in this great city, and those we lost on 9/11.

So as we come and allow this space, not just for their families to reflect, let us all reflect. Let us reflect on what it means to be an American, what it means to be a New Yorker, and what it means to be people who value the work of our public servants every single day, whether they're in law enforcement, our first responders, those who show up in jobs with great pride, proud of the work they do to make this city run, and to be able to welcome visitors from around the world in a professional way.

They always do their jobs, and we just reflect on the members of the Port Authority family as unsung heroes, the ones who make everything happen every day. So I know when we see a veteran, we say, "Thank you for your service." You see law enforcement, you say, "Thank you for protecting us." If you ever see someone who works for the Port Authority, just say, "Thanks for making everything happen so safely."

I am proud to represent all of you, proud to work closely with Kathryn Garcia, our Executive Director here, doing an incredible job. Proud to work with Kevin O'Toole, our Chairman, and to everyone who was involved in making this day become a reality. And of course, Rick Cotton, who predated Kathryn and did an incredible job. I appreciate you. I see Liz Fine there, one of our board members.

Know that as a Governor, I am humbled to be in a position where I can come to a hallowed ground like this and to say to the families, "Your families are our families. Your fight is our fight." As we continue to fight to make sure you get everything you deserve.

The healthcare after all these years, whatever else you've been - and you also deserve to have answers of what people knew 25 years ago when they said, "It's okay to go back to this site." So thank you for the privilege. Thanks to all of our elected officials who are here today. But let us go back to what a reflecting pool means to all of us individually.

Come here and reflect, and know that after 25 years, people who protect us, successfully protect us from another attack on the homeland for a quarter of a century. Do not take that for granted. Be grateful, because I know, as I am the Governor of 20 million people who can sleep better every night, that we are safer.

Port Authority police keeps us safe, and people are making this city run in such a spectacular way. So, just want to give you my gratitude to all of you here today, and love and compassion to all the families who keep showing up every single service, who never forget their families. And their families are looking down on them with a smile, saying, "Thank you for always remembering me." Thank you very much.
