NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon was joined by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin at An Achievable Dream Middle & High School as part of the U.S. Department of Education's national History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday. The tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles.
Over 100 students in tenth through twelfth grade participated in interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of America's founding principles and the important role Virginia played in the fight for independence. The event opened with remarks from Secretary McMahon, CEO of Newport News Public Schools Lee Vreeland, and Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Emily Anne Gullickson, followed by the dynamic student program. Students took part in history-themed challenges, tested their knowledge of Virginia's Revolutionary War heritage, and earned prizes through the History Rocks! initiative - all while exploring themes of civic engagement, patriotism, and the shared responsibilities of citizenship.
"It was a joy to visit Virginia today and celebrate America's founding, honoring the Commonwealth's storied contributions to our great republic - the birthplace of eight U.S. Presidents! As we approach our nation's 250th anniversary, understanding our founding principles and the rights guaranteed to American citizens has never been more important," said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. "History Rocks! encourages students to take an active role in shaping America's future and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to lead with integrity and civic responsibility."
"It was an honor to join Secretary McMahon in Newport News to highlight the importance of civics education," said Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. "The Commonwealth of Virginia played a key role in America's first 250 years, and it's important to take any opportunity to inspire the next generation to make an impact in the future."
Background
The History Rocks! initiative is a key component of the U.S. Department of Education's America 250 celebrations, coordinated with the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, a national partnership with the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and more than 50 national and state organizations. This coalition is dedicated to advancing civic education and expanding opportunities for students to learn about the ideas, individuals, and events that define the American story.
Secretary McMahon, Administration officials, and education leaders will visit schools in all 50 states to showcase examples of high-quality history and civics instruction that bring American principles to life. The tour will feature hands-on learning activities, opportunities for students to explore their roles as future leaders, and conversations with community members about how to strengthen civic education nationwide.
