EEA Joint Committee incorporates 88 legal acts and discusses space cooperation

On 20 March, the EEA Joint Committee adopted 51 Joint Committee Decisions, incorporating 88 legal acts into the EEA Agreement.

Norwegian Ambassador Anders H. Eide, speaking as EFTA Chair, highlighted two incorporated acts in financial services: a regulation ensuring that banks maintain stable funding for securities loans to reduce financial risks, and the Capital Requirements Directive (CRD VI), which enhances the oversight of banks, strengthens penalties, regulates foreign branches, and addresses climate and social risks. He also highlighted a regulation strengthening and reforming the powers, governance and funding of the European Supervisory Authorities, as well as two acts in statistics: on community statistics on migration and international protection, and on European business statistics.

The Chair then presented two EEA EFTA Comments submitted to the EU side in March: on the new Roadworthiness Package and the AgoraEU programme proposal.

The Comment on the Roadworthiness Package supports the EU's ambition to promote road safety, improve the detection of defective vehicles and optimise the exchange of vehicle registration documents.

"Safe and sustainable mobility that ensures the free movement of people and goods underpins the functioning of our shared Internal Market," emphasised Ambassador Eide, highlighting some recommendations from the Comment that could further enhance the proposal.

In their Comment welcoming the AgoraEU programme proposal, the EEA EFTA States make several recommendations based on their experience of participating in other EU programmes, as established under the EEA Agreement.

"In an increasingly challenging geopolitical landscape, it is more important than ever to protect our shared democratic values and to strengthen the creative industries across the 30 EEA States," underlined the EFTA Chair.

Lastly, the EU and the EEA EFTA States exchanged views on secure connectivity and cooperation on space in the EEA.

"The EEA EFTA States and the EU share strong common interests in space activities, supported by decades of successful cooperation in this field. This long-standing partnership strengthens the EEA EFTA States' commitment to continuing and deepening this cooperation," said Ambassador Eide on behalf of the EEA EFTA States.

The next EEA Joint Committee meeting will take place on 30 April.
