"Thank-A-Vet" Program Pays Tribute to Veterans Throughout Year

This Veterans Day, as our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, we are reminded that the story of America is also the story of those who have worn the uniform and answered the call to defend her.

Veterans Day is observed each year on November 11th, marking the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918-the moment that signaled the end of World War I. More than a century later, we continue to pause on this day to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces and protected the freedoms that define our nation.

For 250 years, Americans have debated, disagreed, struggled and sacrificed to build a more perfect union. Through it all, one constant has been the willingness of generations of Americans to stand in harm's way to defend our Constitution, our communities and the principles upon which this nation was founded.

Our veterans are the living connection between America's past and its future. They are our parents, siblings, friends, coworkers and neighbors. They served in times of war and peace, in places around the world and here at home. While their experiences may be different, they share a common bond: a commitment to something greater than themselves and a willingness to sacrifice for the freedoms we too often take for granted.

Here in Erie County, we are proud to be home to approximately 65,000 veterans-one of the largest veteran populations in New York State. Their contributions are woven into the fabric of our communities, and it is our responsibility to ensure that their service is never forgotten.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, Veterans Day provides an especially important opportunity to remember that our independence and liberty have never been guaranteed. Generation after generation of Americans has stepped forward to preserve them.

I encourage every Erie County resident to take time this Veterans Day to attend a ceremony in your community, visit a veteran's memorial, thank a veteran you know, or simply display the American flag outside your home. These simple acts of remembrance send a powerful message: We remember. We appreciate. We will never forget.

At the Erie County Clerk's Office, we proudly honor our veterans 365 days a year through our "Thank-A-Vet" Discount Card Program. If you are a veteran who has not yet filed your honorable discharge papers and received your "Thank-A-Vet" discount card, I encourage you to do so. The "Thank-A-Vet" photo ID card is provided at no charge, giving veterans real savings while giving local businesses an opportunity to show their appreciation and support those who served our country.
