TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. --- The renovations at the popular trout fishing destination, Green Cove Pond, near Tellico Plains in the Cherokee National Forest, have been completed after a multi-year improvement process. Green Cove Pond will officially open on March 1, 2026, for all licensed anglers to fish this beautiful location stocked with rainbow trout.
The pond, built in the 1960s and last renovated 30 years ago, required updates to its basin and surrounding area to ensure a safe, high-quality experience. Years of sedimentation led to shallow water, low oxygen levels, and higher water temperatures, all of which made trout survival, as well as mid-season fishing, extremely difficult. Additionally, constant wave action and water exposure eroded much of the sidewalk and pier foundations, making both unsafe for use.
During the renovation, over 500 cubic yards of sediment were removed, and a broken water control valve was replaced to manage water levels. The renovation has enabled an expanded ADA-compliant sidewalk, ADA parking and picnic area, a new floating fishing pier, and an extended trail that provides greater access around the pond.
Chief of Fisheries, Jason Henegar, stated, "We are grateful to see the completion of this project and look forward to many more years of expanded angler access to the area and superb trout fishing."
