SAN DIEGO, CA - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, congratulates out LGBTQ+ San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert on securing one of the top two spots in California's 48th Congressional District primary election and advancing to the November 3 general election.

"Tonight's results are an important step toward electing a proven pro-equality champion in CA-48 who understands what's at stake for LGBTQ+ people, reproductive freedom, and our democracy," said Tony Hoang, Executive Director of Equality California. "Marni von Wilpert has spent her career fighting for civil rights, standing up to discrimination, and delivering results for the communities she serves. We are proud to congratulate her on advancing to the general election."

An out LGBTQ+ leader, von Wilpert has built a record of defending equality and expanding opportunity throughout her career. As a member of the San Diego City Council, she has stood up against censorship and attacks on inclusive library materials, supported policies that protect LGBTQ+ people and their families, and championed reproductive freedom and economic opportunity. Earlier in her career, she worked as a civil rights attorney protecting people living with HIV/AIDS from discrimination in housing, employment, and health care. If elected, von Wilpert would be the only out LGBTQ+ woman representing California in Congress.

"At a time when extremist politicians continue attacking LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, reproductive freedom, and other fundamental rights, we need leaders from our community who will fight back and move our country forward," Hoang continued. "Marni has demonstrated that leadership throughout her career, and we are confident she will continue to be a powerful advocate for equality and justice. We are all in to help send Marni von Wilpert to Congress in November."

California's 48th Congressional District, which is currently represented by anti-equality incumbent Darrell Issa, is expected to be one of the most competitive congressional races in the country and could play a critical role in determining control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Equality California proudly endorsed von Wilpert in February 2026.
