Sonoma Raceway is set to host the 35th running of the NASCAR Cup Series July 11-13, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the track's storied history. Since its inaugural NASCAR race in 1989, Sonoma has been a fixture on the NASCAR schedule for over three decades, offering fans and drivers a unique road course experience amidst the picturesque backdrop of Northern California's wine country.
Highlights of Sonoma Raceway's NASCAR legacy:
Inaugural NASCAR Race (1989):
The journey began on June 11, 1989, when Ricky Rudd secured victory in the first NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma, driving a Buick to victory.
Record Holder - Jeff Gordon:
Vallejo, Calif., native and NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon boasts a record five wins at Sonoma Raceway, showcasing his exceptional skill on the challenging road course that has fans calling him the undisputed "King of Sonoma Raceway."
Memorable First-Time Winners:
The track has been the site of significant career milestones, including Juan Pablo Montoya's first Cup Series win in 2007 - where he became the first Columbian-born driver to win - and Daniel Suárez's historic victory in 2022, where he became the first Mexican-born driver to win in the Cup Series. Additionally, Sonoma was the site of first and only road course victories from two legends of the sport - Dale Earnhardt (1995) and Jimmie Johnson (2010).
The Return of The Chute (2022):
In 2022, Sonoma Raceway reintroduced its well-known stretch that connects Turn 4 as the cars approach the top of the hill to Turn 7 as the cars prepare for the downhill march through The Esses. The Chute adds nostalgic and challenging elements that have been embraced by drivers and fans alike - mostly for the ability for more opportunities to pass, more laps in the race and ultimately provide a better racing product for fans.
"Hosting the 35th NASCAR Cup Series at Sonoma Raceway is a testament to our fans' passion, our team's dedication, and the track's rich history. We are excited to celebrate this milestone and deliver an unforgettable experience honoring NASCAR's legacy in wine country," said Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Flynn.
