Greenville, PA - Treasurer Stacy Garrity and State Rep. Parke Wentling (R-7) announced today that more than $16,000 in unclaimed property has been returned to the Mercer County Trails Association, the Mercer County Sheriff's Office and the Phil Godfrey Ford Dealership in Greenville.
"It is always my priority to get these funds back in the hands of Pennsylvanians who earned them and that includes not just individuals, but organizations, local government entities and businesses too. I'm grateful to Rep. Wentling and his incredible team for helping to return this money and ensure the dollars go right back to Mercer County where they belong."
"This program is a great example of government working the way it should. Every dollar returned through Treasury's unclaimed property program is money going back where it belongs - to the people and organizations who earned it. It's incredibly important that we continue to raise awareness and make sure rightful owners are found so these funds can be put to good use in our communities."
The Mercer County Trails Association received $4,559, the Mercer County Sheriff's Office will be receiving $400, and Phil Godfrey Ford Dealership received $11,150 during today's unclaimed property returns.
Unclaimed property can include things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance policies, contents of forgotten safe deposit boxes and more. State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.
Treasury is working to return more than $5 billion in unclaimed property, including nearly $16.5 million owed to Pennsylvanians in Mercer County. More than one in ten Pennsylvanians are owed unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth over $1,000.
Since taking office, Treasurer Garrity has returned more than $1 billion, including a record $334 million last year.
