Updated restrictive measures

The Faroe Islands will on 1 January 2026 implement restrictive measures against natural and legal persons, entities and bodies similar to the restrictive measures adopted by the Council of the European Union under Council decision and regulation 2024/2643 of the 8th of October 2024, with later amendments.

The restrictive measures apply to natural and legal persons, entities and bodies who, i.a. are responsible for, or who have participated in activities whose purpose is to destabilize EU-member states, third countries or international organizations by the means of, among others, cyber attacks, obstruction or undermining of the democratic political process, surveillance, sabotage of critical infrastructure, encompassed under the term "hybrid threats".

Among the entities targeted by the updated restrictive measures are two Russian companies whose vessels have conducted fisheries in the Faroese Fishery Zone under the bilateral fisheries agreement between the Faroe Islands and Russia. Vessels belonging to companies subject to the updated sanctions will no longer be permitted to obtain fishing licence to conduct fisheries in the Faroese Fisheries Zone or enter ports in the Faroe Islands.

Additionally, more vessels will be added to the list containing the so called "shadow fleet", whose purpose among others is the circumvention of the Russian oil and gas price cap mechanism.

The executive order setting out the restrictive measures, which will enter into force on the 1st of January 2026, is available here.
