The planned construction of an international hub for professional Black dance in Washington Park would be facilitated through at $10.5 million Community Development Grant proposed to City Council today by Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Plans for the $20.9 million Deeply Rooted Dance Center at 5339 S. State St. includes a 33,270-square-foot building with six dance studios, a performance venue, event space and a rooftop garden.

Grant funding would be provided through the Housing and Economic Development Bond. A City land write-down for the .54-acre site was approved by City Council in 2023.

The proposed project is being led by Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, which was founded in 1996 as a performance and education troupe.
