Tempe This Week Aug. 17, 2026

Last week, the City of Tempe stopped all data sharing from its Flock Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) in response to community privacy concerns and recent misuse of the system by other local law enforcement agencies.

Tempe Police has also launched a new Transparency Portal with live data and usage metrics to show how the technology is used and governed.

The Tempe Police Department audits Flock searches monthly. No misuse by Tempe officers has been found.

The City plans to issue a Request for Proposals for an ALPR vendor that prioritizes strong data security and public safety protections, including penalties for vendor misuse. More information will be available at tempe.gov/procurement.
