Statement by State Secretary Andreas Kravik on the situation in Myanmar

'On this International Day of Human Rights, we celebrate the universal rights that belong to all people, and also highlight those whose rights are violated. The civilian population in Myanmar is facing extensive and persistent human rights violations and a severe humanitarian crisis', said State Secretary Andreas Kravik.

'Nearly five years after the coup in Myanmar, military attacks continue to impact communities, and millions of people have been displaced from their homes. Humanitarians face significant obstacles in their efforts to provide life-saving assistance.

'In this context, the military regime is planning to hold elections.

'In line with ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus and UNSCR 2669, Norway has on several occasions called on all parties to respect fundamental rights, protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access, and for the military to release political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi. These are critical steps in creating a political space where all voices - including those of women, ethnic groups and other minorities - are heard.

'Elections under the current conditions will not solve the fundamental challenges facing Myanmar. Without meaningful steps towards inclusive dialogue and respect for human rights, the situation could even worsen. Norway condemns all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure. This also means that voters, poll workers and political candidates must be allowed to operate in a safe environment. Once again, I call on the military regime and other parties to take real conciliatory steps towards meeting the people of Myanmar's aspirations for a peaceful, democratic and inclusive future.
