What Could Stall Cintas Stock’s Run

Cintas (CTAS) shares returned 23.8% over the past six months, against 9.8% for the S&P 500. At 42.1 times earnings, against 23.0 for the index, the price appears to assume Cintas will keep winning new customers, most of them businesses with no uniform program yet. On its fiscal Q1 2027 call, management named the force that stands in the way. What is that force, and is it slowing Cintas down yet?

Cintas Competes For Customers Who Have Choices

The force is competition. Management said on the fiscal Q1 2027 call that Cintas operates in "an incredibly competitive market" and that its customers have choices. That matters for Cintas, since management also said most of its growth comes from volume: new customers, better retention, and more sales to the customers it already serves.

New business makes up the biggest piece. Management said over two thirds of it comes from businesses that had no uniform program before Cintas signed them. Rivals can bid for each of those accounts, and a customer Cintas already serves can leave for a competitor.

So far, competition has not slowed Cintas down. On the same call, management said it had seen no change in the sales cycle. Cintas also has plenty of businesses left to sign. The company serves 1 million customers out of 16 million to 20 million businesses, management said.

How Much Of Cintas Depends On Uniform Rental?

Most of it. Uniform Rental and Facility Services brought in $8.62 billion in fiscal 2026, representing 76.5% of company revenue. The segment grew 8.1% that year, faster than the 6.8% in fiscal 2025. This means Cintas's largest segment is also the part that sped up.

Management suggested price was not the main driver. On the fiscal Q1 2027 call, management said pricing was probably the least important of the four inputs to rental growth, and that pricing was consistent with the prior year. Cintas therefore grows rental revenue mostly by winning, keeping and selling more to accounts, the same accounts its rivals compete for.

Buyers are paying for that growth to last. Cintas shares closed on October 20, 2026 at their highest close of the past year. Their P/E of 42.1 is more than twice the low of 18.9 it hit on March 31, 2020, though it remains below the peak of 50.7 on September 30, 2024. Both readings come from the last 40 calendar quarter-ends.

What Cintas's Latest Growth Figure Leaves Out

Cintas reported 10.9% revenue growth for fiscal Q1 2027, a quarter with an extra workday. Organic growth, which adjusts for acquisitions, currency and workday differences, was 8.9%, management said. For Uniform Rental and Facility Services, organic growth was 8%, compared with 14.2% for First Aid and Safety Services.

On the same call, management raised its fiscal 2027 revenue guidance to a range of $12.15 billion to $12.27 billion. Cintas will have to deliver that growth while rivals bid for the same accounts.

Competition is a real risk for Cintas, but a slow one. It would show first as fewer new accounts or more lost ones, and on the latest call management said the company is adding customers and keeping more of them. Organic growth for Uniform Rental and Facility Services, in the report expected on or around December 16, 2026, will show whether new businesses keep signing up and whether the segment keeps growing mainly through.
