WWU Senior Instructor of English Geraldine (Geri) Forsberg won The Medium and the Light Award from the Marshall McLuhan Initiative, Inc. based in Winnipeg, Canada in October 2025.

The Medium and the Light Award honors individuals, organizations or institutions that have contributed to the study, research, criticism of media ecology, as well as advancing the religious ideas of Marshall McLuhan. McLuhan was a media critic and analyst.

In an article titled, "Marshall McLuhan and Jacques Ellul in Dialog" co-written with Stephanie Bennett and published in "The Journal of Communication and Religion" in 2020, Forsberg presented original research completed at the Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto. Western Washington University helped to fund this research.

In addition to winning the award, Forsberg also gave two speeches that highlighted the role of Marshall McLuhan's faith and how it shaped his theoretical ideas about communication and media.

"As the father of media studies and one of Canada's most quoted intellectuals, Marshall McLuhan shaped how we understand media and culture. To receive The Medium and the Light Award is a deep and humbling honor," said Forsberg.
