Happy Compost Awareness Week!
On Sunday, April 27, 2025, the City of Alexandria proudly celebrated the official proclamation of International Compost Awareness Week, observed from May 4 to May 10. As we kick off this meaningful week, we're excited to recognize composting as a powerful tool for reducing waste, promoting reuse, and enhancing recycling efforts.
In continued celebration of this important initiative, the City of Alexandria is excited to announce the official continuation of curbside composting service beginning July 1, 2025. After a successful two-year pilot, the program will now be offered as a voluntary, subscription-based service for residents who receive City trash and recycling collections.
Residents who currently receive City collection services, as residential refuse fee-paying customers, can opt-in to curbside composting for just $5 per month or $55 per year. The program is offered in partnership with local composting company provider Compost Crew.
To support the continued growth and accessibility of the program, the City subsidizes approximately 75% of the cost of curbside compost collection which includes the startup fee. This effort ensures the program remains affordable and attractive to all for just $5 per month.
If you participated in the pilot program, your service will continue automatically under the full program - no need to re-enroll.
Participants will receive:
Don't Forget: All City residents can continue to use the free composting drop-off services at local farmers' markets available each weekend. To learn more about composting in the City of Alexandria, visit alexandriava.gov/FoodWaste.
