Week of Events Planned for NMU Investiture Celebration

Northern Michigan University will officially usher in a new era of leadership with the Investiture of NMU President Chris Olsen at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 in the Grand Ballrooms of the Northern Center.

During the ceremony, the NMU Board of Trustees will officially bestow the Chain of Command on Olsen. The chain highlights the tenures of past NMU presidents and is worn at official ceremonies, such as commencement.

A week of events celebrating the occasion will open with a service project at Ishpeming Cemetery from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 26, in which Olsen will work with NMU students, employees and community members to clean the graves of Civil War veterans. The event is open to the public. Equipment and supplies will be provided, along with donuts and coffee.

The university will also host an Investiture Celebration Dinner in the Grand Ballrooms of the Northern Center on Thursday, Oct. 1, beginning with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., with dinner to follow at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person and may be purchased through the same registration process as the Investiture Ceremony.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Northern's new Experience Grants program, which will provide funding to students participating in high-impact learning experiences, such as internships, undergraduate research and travel study.

Other events include a Community Ice Cream Social from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28 on the Northern Center lawn, a campus blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in Jamrich Hall and a faculty scholar buzz session at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1 in 221 Harden Hall.
