Tony Evers today delivered his radio address admonishing Republicans in Congress, including every Republican member of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation, for caving to President Donald J. Trump and doing nothing to prevent his latest reckless trade war with Wisconsin's largest export partner, Canada. Earlier this week, Gov. Evers sent a letter to the Republican members of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation slamming them for enabling President Trump's trade wars and disastrous economic policies. The governor's letter came as Canada's retaliatory tariffs took effect this week, which are expected to send costs skyrocketing across the state. Not only that, but in the days since, President Trump has ratcheted up the trade conflict by announcing a ban on certain Canadian goods from entering the U.S., including alcohol, dairy products, and motorcycles, making matters worse. In his letter, the governor outlined the disastrous impacts this trade war will have on Wisconsin's farmers, producers, manufacturers, and working families, and pointedly called out Republican members of Wisconsin's own Congressional delegation who represent key portions of Wisconsin's rural and farming communities for caving to President Trump on his erratic tariffs and reckless trade wars, leaving Wisconsin farmers and producers behind, including:
Furthermore, We Pay the Tariffs, an organization of small business owners from across the country, found that Wisconsin businesses have paid $5.7 billion in tariff taxes from March 2025 to July 2026. Further, research from the Kiel Institute indicates that it's working folks and families who pay the price for President Trump's erratic trade wars, as American consumers paid for 96 percent of the $200 billion in tariff revenue generated in 2025, despite the president continuing to suggest otherwise. A transcript of the governor's radio address is available below. Hey there! Governor Tony Evers here. Folks, I don't have to tell all of you that everything is too darn expensive these days. We saw record-high gas prices for August, parents are spending nearly 11 percent more to make sure that their kids have what they need for the school year, and grocery prices continue to stretch family budgets thin. All told, since President Trump took office for his second term, Wisconsinites have paid about $2,000 more on gas, electricity, and other tariff-affected goods, with costs only expected to go up. And President Trump's on-again-off-again tariffs and ongoing trade spats have reached a fever pitch in the last couple of weeks, with him escalating his trade war with Wisconsin's number one export partner, Canada. This week, Canada's retaliatory tariffs go into effect, and they are going to cost our state greatly, with a 25 percent counter tariff on our cheese products and 50 percent counter tariff on dairy ingredients like whey and powders. Not to mention the packaging and paper products that will face their own counter tariffs of 50 percent, serving another direct blow to our state. And make no mistake about it, it is American consumers that pay the price for these tariff taxes. In 2025, Americans paid 96 percent of the $200 billion in tariff revenue generated. All the while, Republicans in Congress-including every one of them from Wisconsin-have done nothing to stop him. In fact, they have enabled his chaotic trade wars and disastrous economic policies every step of the way. They have caved to him and turned their backs on Wisconsin farmers, producers, manufacturers, small business owners, and working families across the state. We're sick of it. Republicans in Congress should be standing up for the people we represent, not kowtowing to President Trump. Thank you. |
