Emory Law Professor to Present Judaic Studies Lecture

Michael J. Broyde, Esq., a nationally recognized scholar of Jewish law and ethics and a professor at the Emory University School of Law, will be the featured speaker at The University of Scranton's upcoming Judaic Studies Lecture.

Professor Broyde's lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall. The presentation is free, open to the public and courtesy of the University's Judaic Studies Program, which brings distinguished speakers to campus to explore topics related to Jewish culture and history.

An ordained rabbi, Professor Broyde is also an accomplished scholar and a prolific writer. His most recent book, "Splitting Hairs: The History, Law and Future of Jewish Laws of Modesty and Women's Head Covering," was published in 2024. In it, Professor Broyde explores thousands of years of Jewish law evolving in response to changes in society.

Professor Broyde is a graduate of New York University's School of Law and Yeshiva University.

"Through his teaching, writing and institutional leadership, Broyde has been a leading figure in the study of law and religion, contributing to both scholarly discourse and broader conversations about the role of religious legal traditions in contemporary society," Emory says. "He also serves as an expert witness in a number of matters."
