The Government of Yukon is inviting Mayo residents to review and provide feedback on newly developed draft flood hazard maps for the community.
The maps show how flooding could affect different areas of Mayo under a range of scenarios and are part of ongoing work to better understand flood risk across Yukon communities.
Input from people who live, work and travel in the area will help ensure the maps reflect local knowledge, Traditional Knowledge and lived experiences.
Residents can explore the maps online and share their feedback until June 19. An in-person open house will also be held to give community members an opportunity to ask questions, speak directly with project staff and provide input. The open house will take place on Wednesday, June 3, from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Mayo Community Hall, with dinner and a presentation beginning at 6 pm.
Feedback gathered through the online survey and open house will be used to refine and improve the maps before they are finalized.
Residents can view the maps and participate by visiting the Yukon Flood Hub.
People in Mayo have valuable knowledge and experience when it comes to how water moves across the landscape. That local perspective is essential to making sure these maps are as accurate and useful as possible. I encourage residents to review the draft maps and share their feedback.
Minister of Environment Wade Istchenko
Flood maps are an important part of Mayo's flood preparations and making informed decisions about the community's future. Input from residents and local organizations will ensure the final maps reflect real-world conditions and support emergency preparedness in Mayo. We thank everyone for reviewing the maps, sharing their input, and helping keep Mayo safe.
Minister of Community Services Cory Bellmore
Draft flood hazard maps are developed using the best available scientific data and local information to show how different flooding scenarios could affect surrounding land and infrastructure.
To date, flood hazard maps have been completed for ten communities, which include: Carcross; Tagish; Marsh Lake; Lake Laberge; Carmacks; Teslin; Old Crow; Upper Liard; Dawson; and the Klondike Valley.
Residents and stakeholders in Mayo can review the maps and submit comments via Mayo Flood Maps Survey.
Feedback from the public through both online submissions and the community open house will help refine and improve the maps before they are finalized.
Flood mapping is partially funded by Natural Resources Canada, through the Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program.
Flood maps show flood hazard from natural flooding processes (high water from freshet or ice conditions) and do not assess water quality, contamination or other environmental impacts.
