Larson Blasts Trump Administration Plan to Raise the Retirement Age

Washington, D.C. - Today, House Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano announced the Trump Administration is considering raising the Social Security retirement age.

"After months of denying it, the Trump Administration is finally admitting what we suspected all along," said Larson. "They are planning on raising the retirement age. For every year you raise the age, that is a 7 percent cut in benefits. On the campaign trail, President Trump claimed he would not touch Social Security - but Elon Musk said it was a key target and Scott Bessent said they had a back door plan to privatize it. Slowly but surely, they have all fallen in line with the Project 2025 playbook to cut benefits. Some Americans may have been born at night, but not last night. They know a con when they see one. As costs continue to rise, seniors living on fixed incomes are being hit the hardest. Five million seniors are currently living in poverty. If Trump and his loyalists push through this plan, millions more will be pushed below the poverty line. Not on my watch! Democrats are united and ready for this fight. The 73 million Americans who rely on their hard-earned benefits are counting on their leaders to stand up to Donald Trump and his billionaire cronies. I will never back down from the fight to save your Social Security."
