Buffalo, New York - Fire safety is a lesson every family should know, and this year Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon and the Buffalo Fire Department will host a series of fun and interactive open houses during Fire Prevention Month in October. The events will give children and adults a hands-on opportunity to learn how to stay safe in case of a fire while meeting the team who protects the community.
Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon said, "We all know the best way to prevent injury and property loss due to a fire is to be prepared. Fire Prevention Month is a great way to raise awareness on a number of issues, including the dangers of lithium-ion batteries. I thank the Buffalo Fire Department for its continued commitment to the safety of our city residents and business owners. I encourage everyone to attend one of our Fire Prevention and Safety Open Houses in Buffalo during the month of October to learn more about the essential ways people can reduce their risk for fire."
Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said, "Fire Prevention Month gives us a chance to connect directly with residents and help them understand how small steps can make a big difference in keeping their families safe. This year's focus on lithium-ion battery safety is especially important. These batteries power so many of the devices we rely on every day, but when mishandled, they can quickly become dangerous. By learning how to buy, charge, and dispose of them safely, we can prevent serious fires before they start."
This year's theme focuses on the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, which are often found in everyday items such as cell phones, scooters, and e-bikes. At the open houses, firefighters will share information on how to use these devices safely. The campaign, "Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home", works to educate everyone about using these batteries safely. The campaign stresses how important it is to buy, charge and recycle safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.
Purchase batteries from reputable sources.
Follow manufacturer instructions, use the correct chargers, and avoid charging overnight or unattended.
Properly dispose of old or damaged lithium-ion batteries to prevent hazards.
