Greenwood County woman charged with tax evasion

SCDOR agents arrested a Greenwood County woman on Monday and charged her with seven counts of tax evasion.

Shelley C. Strickland, 55, of Greenwood, was employed by First Baptist Church of Ware Shoals from 2018-24. Over that time, arrest warrants allege that she embezzled more than $445,000 from the church and converted it to her personal use. Strickland did not include that money as income on her South Carolina Individual Income Tax returns for those years. As a result, she evaded at least $29,626 in State Income Tax.

If convicted, Strickland faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for each count. She is being held at the Greenwood Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply.
