Former Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP) resident Tyian Battle, founder of real estate developer Half the Battle LLC, has much to celebrate.
The successful entrepreneur, who also founded ACH Clear Pathwaysto benefit local youth, will mark the groundbreaking of Cliffside Overlook - Half the Battle's first all-affordable housing development, in partnership with Massaro Construction - in the Hill District on Friday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m.
Local stakeholders, including the HACP, will also commemorate this milestone. Speakers will include Mayor Corey O'Connor and Councilman Daniel Lavelle, touching on the importance of investing in affordable housing in the Hill.
Ms. Battle credits part of her success to the doors that opened after completing the HACP Homeownership Program. This led her to purchasing two investment properties, which will soon be transformed into two all-affordable duplexes along the same street she grew up on - Cliff Street in the Hill District.
"This moment is truly special," Battle said. "Cliffside Overlook represents more than a construction project; it is an inaugural and deeply impactful milestone for the Hill District and for the City of Pittsburgh. As a woman-owned developer, standing in this moment alongside community leaders, partners, residents, and supporters means the world to me. Your presence affirms the collective belief that equitable, community-centered development matters."
Cliffside Overlook is comprised of four 3-bedroom, 1.5-bath units. The HACP has awarded four Project-Based Voucher subsidies to the endeavor in an effort to continue its mission to improve the quality of life for all City of Pittsburgh residents, partner with community organizations, and expand the HACP's portfolio of affordable housing investments.
"Ms. Battle has strived to become a successful entrepreneur who selflessly serves her community," HACP Executive Director Caster D. Binion said. "Many of us have watched her journey in awe as she turned grief into a shining light for local youth with the founding of ACH Clear Pathways following the untimely death of her son, and will now also be a beacon for residents in need of an affordable place to call home. Her determination and grit are admirable, and we are proud to support her in this well-deserved milestone."
Other partners who made this development possible include: the Pittsburgh Land Bank, Bridgeway Capital, Federal Home Loan Bank, Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, FNB Corporation, Neighborhood Allies, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
"This development reflects what is possible when community roots, intentional partnerships, and shared vision come together," said Battle. "Cliffside Overlook is not just about building homes; it's about honoring the Hill District's past while creating pathways for its future."
