In a coup for the region, the Mount Morgan Golf Club will host the 2025 Queensland Ladies Sand Green Championships for the first time this weekend, bringing more than 100 competitors and families to the region.
Organised by Golf Queensland, with support from the Mount Morgan Golf Club, the 36-hole event will attract female amateurs from around Queensland to contest the State title.
Deputy Mayor and Communities Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said the Council's Community Assistance Program (CAP) grant of $2,000 would assist the local club to provide amenities for the event outside their normal scope of operations.
"We congratulate the Mount Morgan Golf Club on hosting this event which we understand has already brought significant business to the town," Cr Wickerson said.
"In the past financial year Council has provided around $200,000 to local community clubs and non-profit organisations via the Community Assistance Program.
"These clubs and organisations work very hard to bring people together, provide competition and events that enhance community well being and they often are the driving force for visitors to explore and spend money in our towns and our region.
"We encourage clubs, particularly those who have not considered applying for a CAP grant before, to consider the guidelines and discover how Council can assist support local events or initiatives that build a greater Rockhampton region."
Mount Morgan Ladies Club Captain Shai Pearce is looking forward to competing at home this year and possibly repeating her win from 2024.
Having played golf since she was a small child and with a love of golf running strong in the family, Shai won her first Sand Green Championship at Boulia in 2021 and took it out again in 2024 at the Richmond Golf Club.
"I've been travelling to the Queensland Ladies Sand Green Championships for the past five years and it's a really great environment, catching up and playing with a fantastic bunch of ladies each year," Ms Pearce said.
"We travel all over the state, so to have this event at home and hold it locally is really amazing.
"It's a massive achievement for a small club to host this event.
"It's such a great chance to catch up, and if you play good golf on the day, that's a plus."
The 2025 Queensland Ladies Sand Green Championships will be held at the Mt Morgan Golf Club, 2 Golf Links Road, Hamilton Creek on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June.
