Statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors on the Fatal Shooting of Charlie Kirk

Washington, DC- Below is a statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors President David Holt, Mayor of Oklahoma City, on the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk.

"The murder of Charlie Kirk today in Utah is horrifying and evil. We send our deepest condolences to his family and those who loved him. America's mayors denounce all political violence with the strongest possible conviction. My city has a scar in its downtown that reminds us of the inevitable outcome of extremist politics and dehumanization. Today is another reminder of what happens when we let political differences get in the way of our shared humanity. As Americans and as humans, our similarities far outnumber our differences. We must seek out our common humanity and that common ground. And where it is more difficult to find that common ground, we must accept our differences. That is what it means to live in a pluralistic society. Mayors work across party lines in our cities and among our fellow mayors, because we know that ultimately our goals are the same, regardless of our political views. As mayors, we will continue to hold ourselves accountable to live up to these aspirations, and we will continue to call upon all those in the public sphere to do the same."
