Safe, Effective Sharps Disposal with Compliant Containers

Safe and compliant sharps disposal is an essential step in preserving staff and patient safety. A strong sharps disposal program plays a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment. Proper sharps management and disposal significantly reduces the risk of needlestick injuries and other sharps-related incidents. This, in turn, limits the potential spread of bloodborne pathogens in healthcare facilities. However, the benefits of properly containerizing sharps extend beyond the workplace as doing so protects the environment and the surrounding communities by reducing contact with potentially infectious materials.

What Makes a Sharps Container Compliant?

A key step when implementing a compliant sharps disposal program is selecting the proper container that meets the latest industry standards. Several organizations have requirements for sharps containers, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

What Are OSHA Requirements?

OSHA requires employers to use containers that ensure safe sharps disposal and employee safety. Under the Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Standard (29CFR1910.1030(d)(4)(iii)(A)), OSHA outlines the following requirements for sharps containers:

(1) Contaminated sharps must be discarded immediately or as soon as feasible in containers that are:

  • Closable
  • Puncture-resistant
  • Leakproof on the sides and bottom
  • Properly labeled (biohazard) or color-coded in compliance with OSHA standards

(2) During use, sharps containers must be:

  • Easily accessible to personnel and located as close as possible to areas where sharps are used or anticipated to be found (e.g., laundries)
  • Maintained upright during use
  • Routinely replaced to prevent overfilling

(3) When moving contaminated sharps containers, they must be:

  • Closed immediately prior to removal or replacement to prevent spillage or protrusion of contents during handling, storage, transport, or shipping
  • Placed in a secondary container if there is a risk of leakage

What are NIOSH Guidelines for Container Placement?

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Guidelines recommend ergonomic parameters for installing fixed sharps on walls. Using ergonomic measurements, NIOSH determined the following ideal installation heights for healthcare facilities:

  • For standing workers, containers should be 52 to 56 inches from the floor.
  • For seated workers, containers should be 38 to 42 inches from the floor.

Those measurements accommodate 95% of the adult female healthcare workers, ensuring safe and comfortable usage.

How Do Sharps Containers Enhance Safety?

Sharps containers should have a design that makes it easy to dispose of sharps while minimizing the risk of injury. For example, containers with a vertical drop lid allow for easy disposal while keeping the opening on top visible. This ensures that the sharp is securely inside the container.

Stericycle offers a variety of sharps containers, including both single-use and reusable options. These containers come in multiple sizes, including 2, 4, 8, and 17 gallons, and feature different lid styles, such as vertical drop, horizontal drop, and rotating cylinder lids. Healthcare organizations can choose the most appropriate container based on the facility type and location.
