ESA asks Liechtenstein to fully comply with EEA rules on single-use plastics

The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has today sent a letter of formal notice to Liechtenstein for failing to fulfil its obligations under the Single-Use Plastics Directive.

The directive aims to reduce the environmental and human health impact of single-use plastic products and to promote the transition to a circular economy in the EEA.

Following a conformity assessment of Liechtenstein's national measures implementing the directive, ESA has identified three areas where Liechtenstein has not fulfilled its obligations.

These concerns relate to measures aimed at reducing the consumption of certain single-use plastic products, requirements regarding the recycled plastic content in beverage bottles, and measures intended to inform consumers and encourage responsible behaviour to reduce litter from plastic products.

A letter of formal notice is the first step in an infringement procedure against an EEA EFTA State. Liechtenstein now has two months to express its views before ESA decides whether to take the case further.
