DSU names next General Beadle Honors Director

March 4, 2026

Dakota State University has named Dr. Daniel Spencer as the next director of the General Beadle Honors Program.

"His interdisciplinary background and dedication to thoughtful, student-centered learning make him exceptionally well-suited to lead the next chapter of the Honors Program," said Dr. Rebecca Hoey, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs.

The General Beadle Honors program at Dakota State was developed to challenge students to think independently and imaginatively, while nurturing intellectual curiosity and preparing students for rewarding jobs.

Spencer has a strong background in the humanities, having studied English, classical civilizations, music history, literary theory, and philosophy. He was also an honors student during his freshman year experience at Ohio University.

"It was extraordinarily impactful for my academic and intellectual growth," Spencer said.

When he joined DSU and learned of the honors program, Spencer knew he wanted to be a part of it and began teaching courses for students enrolled in the program. He's excited to foster more student research as program director.

"It's a big transition that involves developing an intimate understanding of admissions, advising, recruitment, and committee work," he explained of taking on the new role.

As he transitions to the role of director, he looks forward to continuing the strong first-year cohort and writing-intensive structure.

"I want to maintain the integrity and the rigor of this program and just the beauty of it," Spencer said. "But I want to see more student activity."

He hopes to expand collaboration with faculty and strengthen mentorship and research opportunities.

Spencer will be replacing current General Beadle Honors Program Director, Dr. Kurt Kemper. The two will work closely together as Spencer transitions to the director role.
