Foreign Minister visit strengthens ties with Indonesia

The Foreign Ministers of New Zealand and Indonesia, Winston Peters and Sugiono, held productive talks in Auckland today.

"Indonesia is an indispensable partner for New Zealand in these turbulent times," Mr Peters said.

"We are ambitious to do more together, and today's talks focused on practical areas where our cooperation can deliver for both countries, including on food security and renewable energy."

The Ministers reviewed the New Zealand-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership and its 2025-2029 Plan of Action.

"We are making good progress towards our goal of NZ$6 billion in two-way trade by 2029. But there is much more we can and should be doing together," Mr Peters says.

"That means intensifying work to remove barriers to trade, strengthening economic cooperation and making the most of improved air links between our countries."

The Ministers also discussed cooperation in agriculture, education and defence and security; as well as important regional and global developments.

"New Zealand sees Indonesia as a partner for the long term. As we look towards 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2028, we have strong ambitions to keep growing this relationship," Mr Peters says.

Following their talks, Ministers Peters and Sugiono released a Joint Statement setting out the full range of discussions and agreed next steps.
