Let's talk trees! The City of West Hollywood has approximately 9,000 public trees that require maintenance and care. Unfortunately, about 40% of the City's Tipu trees have a high concentration of Tipu psyllids in the northeast corner of the City. The Tipu Tree Replacement Planting Project (Phase 3) proposes to remove and replace these infested Tipu trees with new tree species plantings within this boundary area: N. La Brea Avenue at the east, N. Gardner Street at the west, Santa Monica Boulevard at the south, and Fountain Avenue at the north.
The City will host a second community meeting about the Tipu Tree Replacement Planting Project (Phase 3) on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 6 p.m., in accordance with the City's Urban Forest Management Plan. This public meeting will occur in Rooms 5 & 6 at the Plummer Park Community Center, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. Staff will hold an open conversation about the present and future state of the urban forest. Community feedback will help to shape this project's next steps.
The Tipu Tree Replacement Planting Project is comprised of three phases. In 2023, Phase 1 removed and replaced 29 trees between N. Vista Street and N. Detroit Street; in 2024, Phase 2 removed and replaced 51 trees between N. Vista Street and N. La Brea Avenue. Phase 3 represents the final project phase to remove and replace 52 trees between N. Detroit Street, N. Formosa Avenue, N. Fuller Avenue, Poinsettia Drive, and N. Vista Street. In total, 132 Tipu trees will be removed and replaced with new tree species plantings.
In 2019, the West Hollywood City Council adopted the Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) as a 20-year guide to help shape the present and future state of the city's trees. The UFMP was designed to ensure that the community will enjoy the benefits of trees through proper arboricultural techniques and implementation of best management practices. An area of significant concern identified in the plan is climate change and the introduction of a variety of exotic pests is having a major impact on the City's urban forest.
