The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech) and the Korea Agricultural Machinery Industry Cooperative (KAMICO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to advance agricultural mechanization in the country.

The scope of cooperation contemplated under the MOU includes the following:
• Collaborative studies and research on machinery development;
• Exchange of experts and/or provision of technical support;
• Conduct and/or facilitation of study tours, workshops, symposia, training courses and exhibitions on subjects of mutual interest; and
• Other necessary areas related to Agricultural Mechanization.

PHilMech and KAMICO shall also encourage the involvement of concerned agencies, the academe, scientific and business communities and non-government organizations of their respective countries to generate broad support to and increased interest in the activities covered by the cooperation.

KAMICO will also support the efforts of PHilMech and the Philippine government in securing official development assistance in agriculture-related fields.

"I would like to express my 100 percent support for this MOU signing and assure you that PhilMech will do its part in advancing the mechanization of our beloved country. Once again, I would like to thank the Korean government, especially Chairman Kim, who has always been supportive of our agency's initiatives." said PHilMech Director IV Dr. Dionisio G. Alvindia, referring to KAMICO Chairman Shin Gil Kim.

For his part, Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa said that the cooperation of the DA and its attached agencies with KAMICO dates back to 2016.

"The collaboration between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea (ROK) has been going on for years, particularly for agri-fisheries development. However, a strong need to advance mechanization in the country arose. And to simply put it, we are very much ecstatic that ROK through KAMICO offered assistance in this endeavor, hence, the first MOU signing took place on November 3, 2016 in South Korea," Asst. Secretary De Mesa said.

Chairman Kim signed the agreement on the behalf of his institution, which was established in 1962 and has more than 650 members and is a major player in the mechanization of South Korea's agriculture sector.

"I hope that the Philippines can achieve full agricultural mechanization through our collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and the PHilMech). I look forward to engaging in further cooperation in the future," said Chairman Kim.

KAMICO actively works in the global agricultural machinery industry by providing aid to developing countries, dispatching investment research groups to emerging markets overseas and conducting training for international customers. It has earlier cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, and PHilMech for the development of certain farm technologies.

Its latest cooperation with PHilMech encompasses wider involvement in modernizing the Philippine agriculture sector.
