State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks today announced that individuals and businesses impacted by the extreme winter weather from March 15-16 are now eligible for state tax extension relief.
Individual and business taxpayers in Alcona, Alpena, Delta, Missaukee, Ogemaw, Roscommon and Wexford counties may now request additional time to file state tax returns and pay state tax bills. Penalties and interest will be waived for those who qualify.
This relief follows Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's March 17 declaration of a state of emergency for these northern Michigan counties to assist with response and recovery efforts. A severe winter storm system dropped 2-4 feet of snow and ice accumulation caused widespread damage.
"During an emergency, communities face sudden personal and financial challenges," State Treasurer Eubanks said. "Providing extra time to file returns or make payments helps residents and businesses focus on immediate recovery efforts. Taxpayers impacted by the recent severe weather are encouraged to contact Treasury to learn more about available relief."
The tax extension relief is not automatic. Taxpayers must contact Treasury online, by U.S. Postal Service or phone to request relief.
