MEPs want Andrés Ritter as the next EU Chief Prosecutor

The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee adopted its preferred candidates for the post of European Chief Prosecutor.

On Wednesday, MEPs in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs voted by secret ballot on their preferences for the appointment of the next European Chief Prosecutor, the head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).


Voting results:

Andrés RITTER: 46 votes

Stefano CASTELLANI: 11 votes

Emilio Jesús SÁNCHEZ ULLED: 7 votes

Ingrid MASCHL-CLAUSEN: 4 votes

Background and next steps


Parliament is now ready for negotiations with the Council to agree on the new European Chief Prosecutor, which will be appointed for a seven-year term. The incumbent, Laura Codruța Kövesi was the first-ever Chief Prosecutor when she was appointed in October 2019.
