BATON ROUGE - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) had breakfast on Friday in Baton Rouge with pastors from across Louisiana to discuss his work to protect women and babies from dangerous chemical abortion drugs.
"We have an obligation to keep mothers and their unborn babies safe," said Dr. Cassidy. "Chemical abortion drugs kill innocent children and put mothers' lives at risk. The safeguards protecting women from coercion and abuse must be reinstated immediately."
In January, as Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Cassidy led a hearingon the dangers of the abortion drugs. He is also leading conservative Republicans calling on Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary to reinstate commonsense safeguards that protect women from coercion and abuse.
In February, Cassidy led 58 Republican lawmakers in filing an amicus brief supporting Louisiana's lawsuit to protect women and their unborn children from chemical abortions. Additionally, he launched an investigation into chemical abortion drug manufacturers to determine if they are complying with FDA regulations in marketing these dangerous drugs.
The breakfast was organized by the Family Research Council, with their President Tony Perkins thanking Cassidy for his work.
"This is not just another issue," said Mr. Perkins. "The shedding of innocent blood is not just another policy issue. Senator Cassidy has been leading on this issue in Washington, DC, even as late of this week. I appreciate Senator Cassidy's leadership on this. He gets it, he understands it, and he's not afraid to speak out about it."
