Brussels 31 October

European trade unions with membership in Nestlé held an urgent meeting, coordinated by EFFAT and IUF, following the company's announcement to cut 16000 jobs worldwide over the next two years, largely affecting Europe.

The unions call on Nestlé to:

  • Stop axing jobs - the scale of cuts, threatening so many workers and families , is unacceptable.
  • Put people before profit - Nestlé remains profitable but prioritizes shareholder returns over workers. Last year, the company reported more than $12 billion in net profits, even as it continued to cut jobs and resist wage increases."
  • Engage with trade Uniins and respect the role of the NECIC (Nestlé European Council for Information and Consultation) - proper consultation is a legal and ethical obligation.

Enrico Somaglia, EFFAT General Secretary said:

Today, Nestlé workers and their trade unions are joining forces under EFFAT and the IUF to send a strong and clear message to Nestlé shareholders and top management: Stop destroying jobs, Put people before profit! Announcing a massive layoff plan to the media without providing any information to trade unions is irresponsible, illegal under EU and national laws, and utterly unacceptable, especially from the world's largest food manufacturing company.

Nestlé must respect the rights and well-being of its greatest asset - its workers - and engage responsibly with the IUF, EFFAT, and the EWC."
