Larson Urges Speaker Johnson to Call House Back into Session to Act on ICE and Prevent Government Shutdown

East Hartford, CT - Today Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) called on Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the House back into session to address ICE's lawlessness and work to prevent a government shutdown. If the Senate fails to pass the funding package they are voting on this week, and the House remains out of session, many government agencies will shut down on January 31st. Larson issendinga letterto the Speaker of the House tonight, urging him to convene the House to rein in Donald Trump and Kristi Noem's rogue immigration enforcement, and avert a government shutdown that will hurt the American people.

"It is clear that Republicans' half-baked Homeland Security funding bill does not have support in the Senate. Whether it is families being separated by armed, masked agents here in Connecticut, or residents being killed in Minneapolis, we cannot allow these authoritarian abuses of power to go on for one minute longer in the United States of America," said Larson. "Speaker Johnson needs to immediately call the House back into session to prevent a devastating government shutdown and take real action to hold Donald Trump and Kristi Noem's secret police force accountable. This moment demands nothing less. If he keeps the House on recess, public servants, including our troops and air traffic controllers, will miss paychecks - while politicians keep getting paid and ICE continues to terrorize our communities, with no accountability or oversight. The time to act is now."

Last week, Larson voted againsta Department of Homeland Security funding bill that provides new funding for ICE but does not include reforms to hold the agency accountable for their abuses of power. He has called for tearing down and replacing ICE- and redirecting their $75 billion 'Big, Beautiful Bill' slush fund to lowering health care premiums and investing in affordable housing.

During the October 2025 government shutdown, Larson introduced the Make America Govern Again 'MAGA' Actto ensure all federal workers - both military and civilian - are paid during the government shutdown. The people whose pay would be withheld are Members of Congress, the President, Vice President, White House political appointees, and heads of cabinet agencies.
