Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, is a proud, long-standing corporate sponsor of the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS). Founded in 1991, and today the largest professional association of its kind, ISRS brings together a growing community of experts in neurosurgery, radiation oncology, medical physics, and industry who share a passion for radiosurgery, providing opportunities for knowledge sharing to improve patient outcomes.

ISRS hosted its inaugural CNS Summit June 4-5, in Geneva, Switzerland, providing excellent learning opportunities in radiosurgery for brain and spine treatments for attendees from over 30 radiotherapy centers worldwide. The two-day meeting brought together over 150 delegates from around the world, examining the management of benign skull-base and spinal lesions. The dynamic combination of plenary sessions, case presentations, and discussion as well as dedicated hands-on sessions provided an exciting discussion forum and dedicated educational opportunities. As a leader in providing linac-based, frameless radiosurgery solutions, Varian was honored to be part of the summit.

During the first day of the Summit, on June 4, 2025, Varian participated in a sponsored plenary session that included talks from experienced radiation oncologists in the United Kingdom and the United States.

  • Dr. Chloë May from The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool, UK discussed her group's implementation of the Edge radiosurgery and HyperArc High-Definition Radiotherapy systems for benign indications. Highlighting her experience with over 350 benign cases, Dr. May commented that "our clinical results at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre have demonstrated that not only is HyperArc easy to use for planning and delivery of intracranial benign lesions, but that 5-year clinical outcomes are excellent for tumor control, toxicity and completely in line with published literature."
  • Josh Yamada, MD from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA shared his clinical experience of spine radiosurgery. Dr. Yamada's talk demonstrated how spine SBRT is more effective than conventional palliative treatments, provides durable local control without an increase in toxicity and improved symptom palliation. He added that "there is growing evidence that spine SBRT is a safe treatment with a very low incidence of severe side effects."

The second day of the Summit, on June 5, 2025, included a hands-on, peer-to-peer educational session. Together with Dr. Yamada, Varian's Product Manager Berkan Geler, MSc, examined ways to optimize cranial and spine radiosurgery planning using HyperArc and RapidArc in the Eclipse treatment planning system. During this session, the audience discussed strategies that improve plan quality and result in additional efficiencies for the traditionally resource-intensive process of treatment planning for cranial and spine radiosurgery. "Being able to work through clinical cases with the attendees live gave us the opportunity to address questions in multiple steps of the planning process and provide expert insights," Mr. Geler explained. "Helping other centers expand their treatment planning skills to deliver high-quality, precise treatments without adding extra workload to their teams."

Finally, on June 6, 2025, Varian hosted a Reference Site visit at Hôpital de La Tour, Meyrin. The site visit was a fascinating opportunity for attendees to hear from Prof. Marc Levivier and experience his department's linac-based, frameless radiosurgery program. The visit included three main topics:

  • A clinical discussion with Prof. Levivier and Dr. Champion about their Edge radiosurgery program
  • A phantom treatment on the Edge in the department
  • An insight from physics to HyperArc treatment planning and quality assurance

Senior Product Marketing Manager Radiosurgery in EMEA, David James, added "on behalf of Varian and my colleagues who helped make this event a success, I'm very grateful for the support from our expert clinical users in making the three days in Geneva such insightful and rewarding meetings. It was a real pleasure to interact with so many customers and engage in many valuable discussions around SRS and SBRT."

For those who were unable to join us in Geneva, a recording of the presentations by Dr. May and Dr. Yamada will be available to ISRS members through the ISRS website.

The enthusiasm from the ISRS CNS Summit will carry over to next year's annual ISRS Congress that will be held in Sydney, Australia, May 31 - June 3, 2026. We look forward to seeing you there!

The statements by Varian's customers described here are based on results achieved in the customer's unique clinical setting. Because there is no "typical" clinical setting and many variables exist, there is no guarantee that other customers will achieve the same results.
