TechNet Statement on House Privacy Legislation

Washington, D.C. - TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of tech CEOs and senior executives, released the following statement from President and CEO Linda Moore in response to the House Energy and Commerce and House Financial Services Committees' privacy legislation introduced today.

"We are grateful to see the House Energy and Commerce Committee and House Financial Services Committee take this important step forward on national privacy legislation. This effort is especially important for small and medium-sized businesses, which face growing challenges navigating the increasingly fragmented patchwork of state privacy laws. Advancing a comprehensive federal privacy framework, based on a thoughtful consensus model based on what is working among the 22 states with privacy laws, is critical to strengthening consumer trust, protecting Americans' personal information, and providing greater certainty for businesses operating in today's economy. A clear, uniform national standard would ease compliance burdens while ensuring Americans have strong and consistent privacy protections regardless of where they live.

"TechNet has long advocated for a comprehensive federal privacy law that establishes clear rules of the road for businesses, protects consumers' rights online, and supports continued U.S. leadership in digital innovation and artificial intelligence. Following the consensus state model provides predictability and certainty for small and medium-sized businesses who are complying with these laws already. We appreciate the committees' work to move this conversation forward and look forward to engaging with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as the process continues."
