Safely Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste at Mobile Events

Residents are invited to safely and responsibly dispose of old or unwanted chemicals, non-alkaline batteries and battery-powered devices at the City's next two Mobile Household Hazardous Waste Collection events on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Dutchtown Convenience Center (10618 Dutchtown Road), and Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Halls Convenience Center (3608 Neal Drive).

Both events will be held from 3-6 p.m. Convenience centers will not accept trash or recycling during the mobile HHW visits.

Like the City's brick-and-mortar HHW and Solid Waste Facility - open six days a week at 1033 Elm Street - these mobile events are:

- open to all Tennessee residents, regardless of their County of residency, thanks to support from the State of Tennessee.

- open to households only; businesses, churches, non-profits and other groups should contact a permitted hazardous waste transporter for proper disposal.

- Easy as a drive-thru: stay in your car while staff members remove your materials for disposable and share printed information on the many resources available.

"We all benefit when toxic chemicals are correctly disposed and don't end up in landfills streams or wastewater," says Makenzie Read, the City's Waste and Resources Manager.

From acids and automobile oil to varnish and weed killer, household materials with labels like toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable or irritant are accepted. Visit KnoxvilleTN.gov/HHW to see a list of more than 50 common household items accepted by the mobile truck and the permanent facility.
